His Mercy

"His Mercies Are New Every Morning"

A Thought

In this life we can not always do great things. But we can do small things with great love.." :) Mother Teresa

Prayer Quote

“I pray because I can't help myself. I pray because I'm helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time- waking and sleeping. It doesn't change God- it changes me.”
― C. S. Lewis

Faith

I believe in the sun even when it's not shining. I believe in love even when I don't feel it. And I believe in God even when He is silent. (quote found on the wall of a concentration camp)

Remembering.... This is a season of Thankfulness and Hope

Fall always reminds me of reasons to be thankful.  I just went through some random photos and could not help being so very thankful for such a rich life.  It is a life filled with love, joy and hope.

There are so many reasons to have hope for the future!

The Little Girl's Tea.  This is the day Erika said her first English Phrase...."That's not mine!"
My Favorite picture of Sarah and Me.  I LOVE how much she trusted me.  You can see it in her face.
It is something I have always cherished.

This is one of my favorite photos of Anna.  She loved to tease me.  I was pretending I didn't notice
her pulling on my sweater. :)

After watching Peter Pan, the girls decided to reinact the "Oh there you are Peter" scene. LOL

Another  photo with Anna.

Beautiful photos of Albina. Erika was practicing her photography
At the orphanage with Miss Erika.
Daddy bought the girls a see saw.... It has been a hit ever since!
Blue Bonnets in Tx.... back when I THOUGHT I was old. :)
 Sister Love
 SIster Silliness
 Precious Erika
On our way to a very special wedding. (This was the last photo of all of our girls and us together.)
 Studying.... I love this picture.
 What a smile.
At the beach.  She wanted the crab to be in the photo. :)
 Precious ones
 A sign of hope.
 Joy.
A surprise trip to Chuck E. Cheese
Erika made it up to the top of the zip line!
 Sweet Sarah
 Family Boat time

 An impromptu photo .....
 Cooking together!
Capturing the love of a mother and her baby.  Albina drew this of Rebecca and Ruby.
It looks just like them.  She wanted to throw it away because it wasn't good enough.

Mama made borscht and I think they are happy!
 Growing up.....
The Reuniting of two dear friends.... This was the "Tower of Babel Moment".....
Erika spoke no English and Sarah spoke no Russian.... uh oh!
 So Excited!

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES

We have been doing "Friday Night at the Movies" as a family for 30 years plus.  Every now and then we cancel the movie and play cards or games, just spending time with each other.

I love this tradition, and I love it that our kids come home for the weekend to participate.

Each week, a different person has the choice of the movie, so everybody gets to choose eventually. Of course NOW, we get to choose more often, as there are fewer folks at home. :)

Traditions are important for families.  Each of our son's families do something different, and one of our daughters who has moved on also enjoys the tradition.  These seem like small things at the time they are happening, but in the end, they are establishing good memories, good connections, and healthy interactions between family members and friends.

There are lots of friends who come now from associations at the college and church and it is so fun to see them interact.

I love young adults, they are just the coolest of creatures! :)

Here's to another Friday Night!  What are y'all doing tonight?

Before I Run Out To Work

My work is just out the back window in that building back there.
Aunt Jemima Puddle duck is keeping watch of the kitchen while I'm gone. :)

Today I had a hankering to make Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Raisin Cookies.  For some reason the boss man didn't seem to mind. :)

I HAVE A LOVELY HUSBAND

He got these for me just because. :)

IN THE MIDST OF WAVES OF SORROW

THERE IS THIS:

Lamentations 3:22-24 English Standard Version (ESV)

22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;[a]
    his mercies never come to an end;
23 they are new every morning;
    great is your faithfulness.

Isn't this a wonderful comfort.  The Lord is our portion, and in HIM we have our hope.

BE!

Be a rock today! Be a lighthouse today! Be immovable in love and compassion towards those who need it most. They are usually the ones who present themselves as being unlovable. But when those waves of fear, control, anger and resentment, come crashing up against you… know that you are the solid rock they need in the moment, and the light you shine, will guide them safely to the shore of peace.

A Conversation About Discipline

Image result for key car toy

Tonight, a group of folks at our house asked us what we thought about "discipline".
That is always a loaded question, as we know many people who interpret the word "discipline" to mean "punishment".

As we shared with the group how we viewed "discipline", we shared what we often share.  Discipline is not = to punishment.
Punishment can be a part of the discipline equation, but it should be limited.
The question was asked, "But what if somebody doesn't listen?" Or "What if they are rebellious?"

I think these are excellent questions.  And of course, over the years we have had to pour over these ideas again and again.

I used the example of our son when he was 3.  He had horrid temper tantrums.  They had gone on for a few months and  I was at a loss as to how to deal with them.  But it dawned on me that if I was impatient, his tantrums worsened.  As I began to "teach" him what to do, giving him tools to try something else, his tantrums lessened and after 2 weeks they completely ceased!  This was a child who was angry and full of  3 year old frustration.  He was smart, and he was curious and he was impatient.... thus.... tantrums.

So, when tantrums started, I would be calm and explain, sweetie, you may not scream here.  If you are going to scream you will have to do that in your room.  So I would carry him to his room and wait for him to be done.  Then he would be exhausted and fall into my arms disappointed in himself and he would seek comfort.  THAT is when instruction would happen.  "Baby, you may not scream like that, but if you are upset you can tell mommy what is wrong!"
This consistently happened day and night over a 2 week period.  And at the end of 2 weeks, something happened that would normally cause a tantrum. Instead, he walked to his room and sat on his bed.  I followed and praised him and told him how proud I was that he wasn't screaming and then asked him what was wrong.  It was his key car. He couldn't make it work, so  I showed him how to work it, and all was well in his world.

He had learned a VALUABLE tool of how to cope with frustration. It was a lasting tool that did not go away.

Had I been impatient and spanked him for punished him, I think he would have continued the behavior, AND he would have been angry.  I don't believe he would have learned that lesson in a positive lasting way.

Discipline takes time, because discipline is teaching and instruction.

It was an interesting conversation. :)

Visits With Friends

Something that is precious to us, is the visitors we have on a regular basis.  A few years ago, Youth group was held at our home on Wednesdays.  But since the girls are older and in college, now we have College Group in our home on Tuesdays.  And then, there are Friday nights, when we have various guests for Friday Night at the Movies, along with Pizza.
On Wednesday nights we have a ladies prayer meeting and on Saturday evenings we have a group meeting with friends.

Sunday is always a surprise. Today it was an imprompu group of college kids and friends for an after church swim at the lake, and then people playing spades and backgammon.  We taught a few people the ins and outs of backgammon tonight.  That along with Pizza; we had a great night.

I love it that the young people who were once in high school, now come over as young adults.  I love it that they are a great group of young adults who love Jesus and love spending time together.

Several years ago, when the girls were young, we decided to change churches to make sure the church we went to was close by so the girls' friends would be close by.  This is precisely what has happened.
I love it that the girls have a large friend group and that they are all very close.  What a blessing it is to have friends.

"The Books"

I have written a couple of times over the years about "Mom, Dad and Me" books.  I cannot tell you how valuable they have been to our family.

A long time ago, I felt it was important that the girls be able to write and share their feelings on paper, and we would write back.  So we started these books, writing back and forth, back in 2011 I believe. (I'll have to go and look that up)

Well, here we are 8 years later, STILL doing it!  And I cannot tell you the VALUE of those books! They are PRECIOUS!

Sarah was looking through hers not too long ago and declared, "I can't believe I thought that!"
about something she had written several years ago.

It has been interesting watching hand writing mature, thoughts mature, ideas mature, goals come to fruition and more.

Over the years we can look back and see God's faithfulness as we worked on different things.  In our darkest days, we were able to write.

And now, we continue to write.
Miss Erika lives in an apartment now near the college, but comes home on the weekends, and the book is waiting for her.  She writes in it before she leaves.

Sarah writes in her book too.

I am SO THANKFUL FOR THESE BOOKS! They are TREASURES.....

If you have children at home, and have not started a "Mom, Dad and Me Book" or if your kids are too old to call it that, just start a "book".  :)

It is SO WORTH the time and effort.

Healing.....

I remember the vibrant blogging days from years ago, and how everything was going well.  And then, it wasn't.  We went from thriving to striving to "Ummmm..... What just happened here?"

What was I not paying attention to?  What was a blind to?  How could these things have happened to "Our Family?"
I mean, we love our children, this wasn't our first time parenting, and we had been parenting all of the girls for quite some time......

Those were questions that I asked myself.

As we got dragged in deeper and deeper to the realities of how deep trauma can affect an individual, it was very apparent, that DEEP TRAUMA was rearing its ugly head and it was HERE, at home.  MY HOME.  OUR HOME.

I had been writing about it for years and we seemed to have successfully navigeted through much, but there was that proverbial "brick wall" that was in front of us, and BAMMMM!  IT HIT!

It hit HARD.   And it hurt. It hurt so very much.

All of my time went from blogging to surviving.  I even went back and read many things that I had written, to remind myself, that WE could get through this with the Help of our Lord.  HE had NOT abandoned us, though at times it felt just like that.

As we worked over time with several different counselors, pastors and friends, prayed, poured through scripture, poured our hearts out to each other.... slowly the pieces started to come together.
And we have survived.

We have seen HIS faithfulness to us in all situations.  We have been broken before the Lord, and have learned much.
"There is no pit so deep, that God isn't deeper still."  That statement is from Corrie Ten Boom.  And I believe it with all of my heart.

Both of our girls who are not at home are still in contact and I am so very thankful for that. Both of them have beautiful little baby boys.  Alli lives close by and we are able to see her and our little grand son Sebastian.  She is a hard worker and has been employee of the month at her job.But her BEST job is being a mama to this little one.

I had the honor of being at his birth.  Bringing life into this world is an amazing thing, and Alli did such a great job!
She is a good mama, and LOVES this little one.  And he adores his mama.

Dr. Joseph

Our third son Joseph, is now Dr. Joseph.  He graduated from UTD with his doctorate of philosophy in World Studies and now teaches Philosophy at the college level.
The two older boys were able to attend the graduation. The two younger children joined afterwards for a celebration of YEARS of Hard work!  He could not have done it without the support and encouragement of Rebecca, his lovely wife of 16. years.

We are so proud of him!

He is also a published author.

The Grand Canyon Trip

The Grand Canyon

We took a trip this year to the Grand Canyon. We haven't been anywhere in MANY YEARS, so it was such a joy to take ONE LAST TRIP with our last 2 girls at home.

I remember hiking down the North Rim and then up the Bright Angel Trail when I was 17.  Sarah and I hiked DOWN the Bright Angel Trail for about 3/4 of a mile and then back up.  Of course going UP is a LOT harder than going down.  But for Sarah, she JOGGED up, and I was the "old lady trailer".....
But we made it. :)

Here are some high lights of our trip, which was completed with a stay in Albuquerque NM and staying a the top of the Sandia Mountains on the 4th of July overlooking the City while they were shooting off the fire works.  It was AMAZING!

We included in our trip staying in Williams AZ.  There is a wild animal park called Bearzonia. It was pretty neat to see.

This was the cool entrance

There are bears out there under the trees and in the cave.

This was on top of the mountain on the 4th of July overlooking Albuquerque. We got to spend some precious time with Chuck and Lilly.
